Sixty-three percent of American women think that if there's no family history of cancer, you're not likely to develop the disease, a new survey found.(環(huán)球網(wǎng)校2016年職稱(chēng)英語(yǔ)考試《綜合類(lèi)》閱讀判斷題專(zhuān)項(xiàng)小測(cè)第四套)
In fact, most people who develop cancer have no family history of cancer. according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists(ACOG)(美國(guó)婦產(chǎn)科醫(yī)師學(xué)會(huì)), which sponsored the survey.
"Too many women are dying from cancer," Dr. Douglas W. Laube, ACOG's immediate past president, said during a Friday teleconference。"An estimated 200,070 women will die in the U. S. this year, and over 600,078 women will be diagnosed with cancer. The results of this survey found a worrisome(令人擔(dān)憂(yōu)的)gap in women's knowledge about cancer. "
Based on the findings, ACOG is increasing its efforts to educate women about cancer and the need for regular screening tests.
Although the survey found many misconceptions(錯(cuò)誤觀念)about cancer, 76 percent of women surveyed did say they feel knowledgeable about how they can reduce their risk of the disease.
However, only 52 percent said they were doing enough to reduce that risk. And l0 percent said they hadn't done anything in the past year to lower their risk. Seventeen percent said they wouldn't change their lifestyles, even if changes would lower their cancer risk.
Many women said they were afraid to undergo screening out of fear of finding cancer. Twenty percent said they didn't want to know if they had cancer.
In response to these findings, ACOG will launch on Oct. 29 a new website - Protect & Detect:What Women Should Know about Cancer. The guide is designed to help women to take charge of their health and improve their understanding of their risk of cancer - and the lifestyle steps they can take to cut that risk.

Leonard Turkel couldn’t believe his ears when he learned what happened to the results of eye screenings (篩查) of thousands of Miami-Dade County public school students.
Although the tests are mandated (授權(quán)) by the state, the businessman-turned-philanthropist (慈善家) discovered that nobody was actually using the scores to ensure that kids could see the blackboard in class.
Today, a sight-laboratory-in-a-bus financed by Turkel pulls up to (追上) schools in low-income areas, not only providing eyesight tests for children but also ensuring that glasses, when needed, are made and delivered within days—all for free.
It was in the mid-1990s that Turkel started the sight program almost by chance. Important in opening a primary care center in the low-income Miami community of Overtown, Turkel said he was told that the eye screening he was planning for children was already being done by the school system.
But then he learned that the results of school screenings—to be performed several times during a child’s schooling, along with tests for hearing and scoliosis (脊柱側(cè)凸)—were essentially(基本的) sitting in drawers. The school system could tell anybody who asked how many kids had failed sight screenings, but nobody was getting the kids help. Turkel decided to change that.
“Once the kids who need help are identified, there had to be a way to go to the schools and provide them with whatever they needed,” said Turkel, president of the Miami-based nonprofit Turkel Resource Foundation (基金會(huì)) and co-founder of the University of Miami business school’s Center for Nonprofit Management.
The program, which at its height has served about 6,000 students a year, has faced financial obstacles but is operating today under a new grant (撥款)and with the help of 14 organizations. All schools in the 360,000-student system are now covered by the program.
1.Leonard Turkel felt surprised at the results of eye screenings of the students
A.Right B.Wrong C.Not mentioned
正確答案:A

2.Leonard Turkel used to be a philanthropist, but now he has turned a businessman
A.Right B.Wrong C.Not mentioned
3.A sight-laboratory-in-a-bus provides poor areas with eyesight tests and glasses for free
